Planted with a Purpose by T. D. Jakes is a small book with a big message. I think it is so hard to keep strong in our faith during the difficult times of life, but Jakes reminds us that those are precisely the times that we most need to keep looking to God.

Planted with a Purpose is about 4 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches--which is a great size to slide in to your purse, book bag or brief case. This book may also be the dose of encouragement that a friend or family member needs during hard time so it would be a nice little gift book. The main message is that when we go through times of waiting or crushing and things are really difficult, God is still with us and He is using those times to grow us and make us more like Him. Jakes further says that God will use those times and bring us bigger blessings at the end of them.

Planted with Purpose is the first book that I have read by Jakes. I liked his references to how God grows us like growing vines and trees because I am a gardener and a grower. It was easy to see his analogies in my mind and I could see how God uses our challenges to grow us and bless us. The book is a mix of Scripture references and stories that Jakes shares from his life. I would recommend anyone read it when they are going through challenges--and that may be many of right now with the state of our country.

Essential Speed Reading Techniques by Katya Seberson is a small book that could pack a big punch in your reading life. Essential Speed Reading Techniques starts out by explaining what speed reading is and what it is not. If you thought speed reading was just skimming a book like I did, Seberson will define what it really means in this book and how to use it to your full advantage. While I read this book, I am not yet a better, faster reader. I am improving, but as the author shares, this is a process that takes time and is a skill worth learning. Seberson offers both advice and practice exercises in this book to help you learn and grow into the reader you want to be. I was impressed with Essential Speed Reading Techniques . I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone who wants to be a better reader. Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up? by Paula Faris Illustrated by Bhagya Madanasinghe

  I think there has always been a lot of pressure on adults and children to "do" something big with their lives in the way of career. We do often ask children, What do you want to Do When you Grow up?" Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up? by Paula Faris changes the tone and the outlook for children with this book. I am not sure I can begin to tell you how much I love this book, but I will try. Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up? has beautiful bright illustrations. I also love that the illustrations are inclusive and show children of all colors, cultures and backgrounds. I think that background adds to the appeal of the book. This is a large children's book, measuring about 9 1/4 by 9 3/4 inches in size and 32 pages long.
