Enduring Grace Church Year Journals from Concordia
I recently received two devotional church year journals to review. One is for adults and the other is for children.
What I like about the adult journal is that it follows the liturgical year. The book itself is beautiful. The readings are in a larger print, which I personally like, as they are easy to pick up and read. At the front of the book, there is a page describing how to use the journal and then a few that explain what the church year is. The other nice is, is that this book starts right out with Advent so it is ready to use right now. The Advent readings include Bible verses, commentary, hymns, prayers and space to write. All of the readings for various events throughout the church year include a similar style. I really like this style. They give a lot of food for thought and space to write.
The Enduring Grace Church Year Journal For Kids is a larger workbook-sized paperback book. This is a book for elementary-aged kids and their families to read through and use together. There are Scripture references for every Sunday of the year, introductions to Christian seasons and festivals, Scriptural reflections following the readings, discussion prompts, hymn suggestions from the Lutheran Service Book, Bible illustrations to color and then space for journaling and prayer.
These books are Lutheran based and cover Liturgical Year C. I am not Lutheran but I really like how these books are designed and will find them to be nice to uses throughout the year.
About the Liturgical Year:
From earliest times the Church has gathered on Sundays to celebrate the good news of Jesus Christ. Over time an annual cycle of Christian memory-making has also developed, which allows us to remember his life, death, and resurrection; to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit; and to recall the ministry of the holy people who have spread the Christian faith over the centuries.
Through the structuring of our Christian memory, the past is able to come into our present.
The liturgical or Church year is divided into several seasons. It begins with Advent, which looks forward to Christmas. The visit of the wise men to Jesus is remembered at Epiphany, after which there is a period of ‘ordinary time’. The six weeks of Lent prepare us for Easter, which celebrates Jesus’s resurrection, leading forward to his Ascension and the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church at Pentecost. ‘Ordinary time’ then resumes until the end of the year.
