The Deep-Rooted Marriage by Dan B. Allender and Steve Call





I started reading books by Dan Allender about 27 years ago. I learned about him from a Christian counselor that had studied under him. Since then, I have read most of his books. I always learn something from his books. The Deep-Rooted Marriage by Dan Allender and Steve Call is a truly insightful book full of practical advice and many personal stories. 

"Story"  is a theme running through many of the books I have read by Dan, including this one. We all have a story that starts with our birth. When we get married, we bring our individual stories together to start a new story together, so to speak, forged of two people. Through this author, I also see story themes in the Bible and this book also includes some Biblical references but it also makes clear that God is not out to shame us and also talks some about spiritual abuse. My family of origin was bathed in shame so I think this is a key reason I like his books. I always feel "safe" with the author's words when I read his books. I haven't read a Steve Call book before but I like his contributions to the book too.

I think anyone could benefit from The Deep-Rooted Marriage book and companion guide. This is the first time I have ever seen one of Allendar's companion guides. I could see where this would be helpful to use with the book. I think, in a best-case scenario, both husband and wife would use this book and companion guide together. But certainly a person could benefit from reading the book and guide alone. 

The Deep-Rooted Marriage helps you see better where you came from so that you can be a better partner and better mom/dad/friend, etc. The book offers tools and practices to apply to your life to create new healthier patterns of relating to people. For that reason, this isn't a book I can read through quickly. Honestly, I am still working through it. I think to get the most out of a book like this, most people need to take it slow if they want lasting change. Quick reads, at least for me, don't lead to lasting changes.

Welcome to the Honey B and B by Melody Carlson

  Welcome to the Honey B & B is the latest book by Melody Carlson. Unlike most of her other books, this book is personal for her. One of the main characters suffers from FTD ( Frontotemporal Dementia), which is a disease that Melody's husband also suffered from. I think she does a good job of showing what it is like to live with someone who has this disease without making the book too heavy. Jewel McKerry and her 13-year old daughter, Cooper, move back to the farm where Jewel grew up to help her mom, Honey, take care of her dad who has FTD.  Throughout this book, there are challenges that all of the characters must deal with and ways that they learn to support each other as family members. This disease also affects neighbor relations. I enjoyed the characters in Welcome to the Honey B & B . I thought that the author did a good job of showing the challenges of being a care giver (or a set of care givers) for someone with FTD. I also enjoyed the romance that developed. ...
