An Overdue Match by Sarah Monzon
Do you know anyone with alopecia? When I was growing up, one of my classmate's moms had alopecia. She was a nice lady and I remember her handling it with grace at the time. However, I am sure I don't know all she went through to reach that point. In An Overdue Match, Sarah Monzon gives readers a glimpse into what it is like to live with alopecia through her main character.
An Overdue Match is the first book in the Checking Out Love series. I liked the main female character a lot and could really feel for her with her struggles as she learned to live with alopecia. Evangeline Kelly is different than many of the main characters from books that I have read in the past. I liked how the author developed this character and shared her struggles with the reader.
I also liked how the male main character, Tai Davis, understood some of what it felt like to have a different health issue that had the potential to hold him back as he has asthma. He also is a tattoo artist and has dealt with some judgement for his career. His health issue also helped lead him on his path to being a tattoo artist as shared in the book.
Evangeline is new to town and didn't know Tai was her co-worker's cousin before they both played a harmless prank on her. As Evangeline works as a librarian she also had the idea to play matchmaker to local couples based on the similarity of the books that they checked-out. I thought that was a fun premise and it is interesting to go through the book and see how that works out for her. Tai decides to help her with her plan since she doesn't know the people in town like he does.
All in all, I enjoyed An Overdue Match. I liked that it had some lighter moments but I also like that it tackled the health issue of alopecia and the importance of getting to know people beyond just looking at their looks. I think this is a book that most people could relate to as many of us have something that holds us back even though it is probably something different than these characters. I also liked how the romance worked out in this book. The matchmaking was a fun threat too. The pacing throughout the book was good and there were sub plots through the book, which is how real life is, that kept the book moving. I am looking forward to the next book in the series and there is a brief glimpse into the next book at the back of An Overdue Match.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through JustRead Tours. All opinions within this review are my own.
