The Man Next Door by Sheila Roberts
The Man Next Door is my first book by Sheila Roberts. I wasn't really sure what to expect but I was thinking this book would be mostly a mystery. There definitely is a mystery--but there is also family drama, romance, and some light humor in this book.
The Man Next Door is a unique rom-com spin on the classic Alfred Hitchcock story, Rear Window.
Zona is recently divorced and moves back home with her mom, Louise. Her gambling ex-husband lost all of their savings--and robbed her young adult daughter's nursing college fund. Zona is determined to help her daughter Bree go to nursing school. After watching her mom deal with some unhealthy relationships, Bree isn't sure she ever wants to be in one.
Louise is planning a single's cruise, which starts off great--until she makes a wrong move on the dance floor. Then Louise is back home from the cruise and Zona is helping her through her challenges.
Zona and Louise are also enjoying their new neighbor, Alec, who is around Zona's age. However, after a few encounters, they aren't sure who the real Alec is. Is he a nice guy next door or is he someone more dangerous?
The Man Next Door is billed as a rom-com. However, the characters deal with some difficult issues at times so some parts are a little heavier, I think. This book is a character driven novel and I did enjoy getting to know all of the main characters. I didn't really find it to be too funny but I did enjoy the story-line. Everyone's sense of humor is different too. I thought there would mostly be mystery but there was some romance that I enjoyed too--with more than one character.
The Man Next Door is a clean read with just a few minor cuss words but no F-bombs. There is also a place where one character drinks too much and there is some violence from another character later in the book. I would read another novel by this author even though this book ended up being different than I expected as I did enjoy getting to know the characters and their struggles. I especially enjoyed the ending too.
I received a copy of this book from the author and Pump Up Your Book Tours. All opinions are my own.
